Adaptation – In the Clutches of a Discourse

The installation Socializing rooms sprang from people’s stories about the pressure for adaptation in the meeting with powerfully socializing institutions such as school and health care. Socializing rooms is a part of the master project Adaptation – In the Clutches of a Discourse that touches upon discursive power and knowledge structures. The project studies the significance of being an individual in the grip of society, with embedded ways of thinking, evaluating, and acting. One example of how a discursive understanding and knowledge circulates is the uses of the DSM – the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders. The DSM is a manual used within psychiatry for diagnosing mental illness. It consists of checklists of symptoms for diagnosis. The symptoms are described behaviours, perceived mental states, and other physiological conditions, which are placed in relation to what is regarded as normal.

I reflect on the diagnostic models of explanation – conditioned by the period – for human suffering, emotional states, and other deviant behaviour. Hysterics have had their time, as did mad travellers and homosexuals. The diagnoses strengthen and confirm norms and boundaries. The Zeitgeist of our time singles out those who haven’t succeeded in adapting to the norms, largely through diagnoses of attention deficits and low- or hyperactivity disorders such as ADHD.

Anpassning – i klorna på en diskurs

Installationen Socialiserande rum är sprungen ur människors berättelser om kravet på anpassning i mötet med starkt socialiserande institutioner såsom skola och sjukvård. Socialiserande rum är en del av masterprojektet Anpassning – i klorna på en diskurs som rör diskursiva makt- och kunskapsstrukturer. Projektet undersöker innebörden av att vara människa i samhällets grepp, med inbyggda sätt att tänka, värdera och handla. Ett exempel på hur ett diskursivt sätt att förstå människan cirkulerar är användandet av DSM – Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders. DSM är en manual som används inom psykiatrin vid diagnosticering av mental ohälsa. Manualen består av checklistor på symptom för diagnoser. Symptomen är beskrivna beteenden, uppfattade sinneslägen och andra fysiologiska effekter, vilka ställs i förhållande till vad som anses vara normalt.

Jag funderar över olika tidsbundna diagnostiska förklaringsmodeller för mänskligt lidande, känslolägen eller avvikande beteenden. Hysterikorna har haft sin tid. Mad travellers och homosexuella likaså. Diagnoserna befäster och bekräftar normer och gränser. Vår tids Zeitgeist pekar ut dem som inte klarat anpassningen till normer, t. ex. i skolan genom diagnoser på uppmärksamhets- och koncentrationsstörningar, som ADHD.
