The Lost Collection tells about a lost art collection belonging to a Dutch art dealer. The fate of the collection shows how the Nazis “acquired” it in 1940 and was later found and returned to the Netherlands to be restituted. The claim by the heirs of the collection was rejected by the Dutch State and the collection was kept in the Dutch National Collection until 2006.

Last autumn I travelled around the Netherlands to find trails related to this collection. My role as “the researcher” got me into places that are otherwise closed. With this project, I want to raise questions about who has the right to cultural assets when public and private interests collide, how museums and states deal with art that has questionable ownership and how history is sometimes depicted as a blur between reality and fiction.

The Lost Collection berättar om en försvunnen konstsamling som tillhör en holländsk konsthandlare. Samlingens öde visar hur nazisterna ”införskaffade” den 1940 och hur den senare återfanns och returnerades till Nederländerna för att kunna återlämnas. Anspråken från arvtagarna till samlingen avslogs av den nederländska staten, så samlingen behölls i den nederländska nationella konstsamlingen fram till 2006.

Förra hösten reste jag runt i Nederländerna för att hitta spår som hade att göra med den här samlingen. Min roll som ”forskare” gjorde att jag kunde komma in på ställen som annars hade varit stängda. I och med det här projektet vill jag lyfta fram frågan om vem som har rätt till kulturtillgångarna när de offentliga och privata intressena kolliderar, om hur museer och nationer hanterar konst med ifrågasatt ägandeskap och hur historien ibland beskrivs som utsuddad mellan verklighet och fiktion.
