This year marks the 20th anniversary of the distribution of Lyckad nedfrysning av herr Moro (The Successful Refrigeration of Mr. Moro) to all ninth-year students in Stockholm, as part of a campaign to raise the status of the health care professions on the one hand, and on the other to rouse interest in ethical questions among youth. The book contains a collection of picture and texts, quotes from philosophical and literary texts, and historical facts along with on-the-spot accounts, documentary photographs, and portraits. I was a teenager when the book came out and it stirred many feelings in me – and also questions about how young people today would regard this type of book and pictures. The flow of images today looks quite different compared with 20 years ago. Our illustrating habits and the way we produce pictures has changed. Pictures have come to play an ever greater role in our society; they’re used to a greater extent in schools, but outside of schools they have even greater significance for young people.

The extensive use of picture media means that sometimes we take on a passive role in relation to pictures. It is, however, important to note that we are still affected by them – but what do we do with these impressions? How do we handle them?

With this book as a starting point, I study what young people’s views and perceptions of pictures in ethics, as well as moral and philosophical issues, look like today and how they have changed in the last 20 years, what impact photographs in a book have compared with pictures in other media, what kind of pictures move them and what’s in there that moves them. The purpose of the work is to find out how today’s young people handle the large flood of emotionally powerful pictures, and how they handle the experiencing what they see.

In the interpretation portion, I bring out my discussion through showing the complexity between the hidden and the obvious, the clearly startling and the more subtle mode of expression.

I år är det 20 år sedan boken ”Lyckad nedfrysning av herr Moro” delades ut till alla niondeklassare i Stockholm som en del i en kampanj, dels i syfte att höja vårdyrkets status, dels för att väcka intresse för etiska frågor bland ungdomar. Boken innehåller en samling bilder och texter; utdrag ur filosofiska och skönlitterära texter och historiska fakta tillsammans med starka ögonblicksbilder, dokumentära foton och porträtt.
Jag var själv tonåring när boken gavs ut och den har för mig väckt många känslor, men också frågor om hur unga idag skulle uppfatta denna typ av bok och bilder. Idag ser bildflödet mycket annorlunda ut jämfört med för 20 år sedan. Vår bildvana och vårt bildproducerande har förändrats. Bilder har kommit att spela en allt större roll i vårt samhälle, de används i större utsträckning i skolan, men utanför skolan har de ännu större betydelse för ungdomar.

Den omfattande användningen av bildmediet gör att vi ibland måste inta en passiv roll i förhållande till bilder. Det är dock viktigt att uppmärksamma att vi ändå påverkas av dem – men vad gör vi av dessa intryck? Hur behandlar vi dem?

Med denna bok som utgångspunkt undersöker jag hur ungas bildsyn och bilduppfattning inom etik och moralfilosofiska frågor ser ut idag och hur de har förändrats under de senaste 20 åren, vilken inverkan fotografier i en bok har jämfört med bilder i andra medier, vilka typer av bilder som berör och vad i dessa det är som berör.
Syftet med arbetet är att ta reda på hur ungdomar idag hanterar det stora flödet av emotionellt starka bilder och hur de hanterar upplevelsen av det de ser.

I gestaltningsdelen framhävs min diskussion genom att visa på komplexiteten mellan det gömda och det uppenbara, det tydligt uppseendeväckande och det mer subtila uttryckssättet.
